I have been introduced this book, The End of Alzheimer’s Program, by Dr Dale Bredesen on preventing and potentially reversing cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease.

There are several lifestyle change recommendations align with general health practices that could be beneficial.

Here are five actionable takeaways from the book that we have implemented some at our clubhouse.

1. Promote a Brain-Healthy Diet

Takeaway: The ReCODE protocol emphasizes a diet low in refined carbohydrates and rich in non-starchy vegetables, healthy fats, and lean proteins

Implementation:

  • Meal Planning: Design menus that incorporate leafy greens, colorful vegetables, nuts, seeds, and omega-3-rich fish like salmon.

  • Limit Processed Foods: Reduce offerings of processed snacks and sugary beverages.

  • Hydration: Ensure consistent access to water and herbal teas

2. Encourage Regular Physical Activity

Takeaway: Regular exercise is associated with improved cognitive function and overall health.

Implementation:

  • Daily Movement Sessions: Group exercises that promote not just cardiovascular but also strengthening activities

  • Functional Exercises: Incorporate exercises that mimic daily tasks to maintain independence

  • Monitor Participation: Track attendance and engagement to tailor programs effectively.

3. Ensure Quality Sleep

Takeaway: Adequate sleep is crucial for cognitive health and overall well-being.

Implementation:

  • Sleep Hygiene Education: Provide information sessions on the importance of sleep and tips for better sleep habits.

  • Comfortable Rest Areas: Create quiet, comfortable spaces for rest during the day.

  • Routine Scheduling: Maintain consistent daily schedules to support natural sleep-wake cycles.

4. Foster Social Engagement and Cognitive Stimulation

Implementation:

  • Group Activities: Facilitate games, discussions, and collaborative projects.

  • Educational Workshops: Offer classes or lectures on various topics of interest.

  • Intergenerational Programs: Partner with local schools or community groups for joint activities.

5. Monitor and Manage Metabolic Health

Takeaway: Addressing factors like insulin resistance and inflammation is part of the ReCODE protocol

Implementation:

  • Health Screenings: Coordinate with healthcare providers to offer regular check-ups, including blood sugar and cholesterol monitoring.

  • Nutrition Counseling: Provide access to dietitians for personalized dietary advice.

  • Educational Materials: Distribute information on managing chronic conditions through lifestyle choices.

Hence, in our clubhouse, we practise three important elements:

  1. Functional exercises that are led by physiotherapist. The aim is to strengthen and combat muscle atrophy.
  2. Cognitive programs that will stimulate all 5 senses ensuring that we remain alert and maintain our limbs and eyesight coordination
  3. Lastly, social interaction via board games, mahjong, arts & craft and even karaoke
